"Little Boy"

The nickname given to the Uranium 235 atomic bomb that struck Hiroshima, Japan, on August 3, 1945. The USAAF B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped it from 31, 600 feet, at 8:15 A.M. local time, and fifty seconds later it detonated in the center of the city. It produced a 20, 000-foot mushroom cloud of smoke and debris; resulted in over 120, 000 immediate and subsequent fatalities; and destroyed 81 percent of the city's structures. See also Fat Man.
