Review

Working interchangeably, Cut Chemist and Shortkut handled a total of five turntables on this album, recorded live in San Francisco. Unlike the vast majority of turntablist albums, Live at the Future Primitive Sound Session ably approximates the incredible excitement of actually watching a world-class DJ team in action. Old-school fans will recognize much of the material (from Eric B. & Rakim, Ultramagnetic MC's, Newcleus, Afrika Bambaataa, even a dramatically reworked version of the Beastie Boys' "Egg Man"), but there are quite a few rare grooves in the mix as well -- including what could be the first use of Homer & Jethro in a hip-hop context. Continually inventive and entertaining, Live at the Future Primitive Sound Session is one of the early turntablist classics. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
