Plot
A group of women gather together for a bachelorette party in this comedy. They have come to celebrate the upcoming wedding of Jamie, a somewhat famous actress who has been married several times. She is being particularly dramatic and the gathering at Georgina's restaurant becomes somewhat serious as the women share their pain, their sexual fantasies and their problems. Among the guests are the gossipy Jill who enjoys baiting her ever-vulnerable sister Rachel; Marcy, who is involved with an abusive and insanely jealous man, and the chronically depressed Chris who lives with her lover Georgina. The bride is worried because her groom is having a stripper at his party, and lesbian Georgina worries because she has been secretly lusting after her male sous chef. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Review
Something of a precursor to television's Sex in the City, Julianna Lavin's slumber party/talkathon of a group of women friends in their thirties is an entertaining and thoughtful, if less than earth-shaking, movie. As the wine flows, the women begin to open up about their issues and relationships with men, but mostly about sex. Dana Delany gives the most striking performance, as a housewife concealing an unhappy marriage who revels in the details of her friends' sex lives. Kim Catrall also scores as a B-movie actress in the midst of an emotional meltdown. Nothing too surprising transpires, but the film has enough wit and insight about these women, as well as a palpable sense that they really could all be friends, that it leaves one with a vague feeling of satisfaction. Not to be overlooked is the work of popular L.A. club fixture "Vaginal" Davis, as the pool man. ~ Michael Costello, All Movie Guide
