Livingstone

Livingstone, city (1990 est. pop. 82,218), S Zambia, near the Zambezi River, which forms the border with Zimbabwe. It is an industrial, commercial, and transportation center. Manufactures include clothing, textiles, and food products. Founded in 1905, the city was named for David Livingstone, the Scots explorer. From 1911 to 1935 it served as capital of the British protectorate of Northern Rhodesia. Today it is the site of Livingstone Museum, which contains archaeological, ethnological, and historical materials, including letters and relics of Livingstone. Victoria Falls and a game reserve are nearby.
