Review

This easy, breezy compilation brings the indie pop and rock to Tokyo town, offering the Japanese market strong tracks from Tahiti 80 (a cool demo version of "Heartbeat"), Cat Power (the Moon Pix fave "Cross Bones Style"), His Name is Alive ("Say a Cuss Word"), and various others. There's a patch of keyboard pop from the always entertaining James McNew side project Dump, the Notwist's "Chemicals" is some attractively brittle electro-pop, and Solex is, as usual, kitschy, cool, and screwy all at once. All in all Llama Ranch is a pretty nice find. Keep an eye out for it in your local indie haven's comp or import bin. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
