Isle of Anglesey Llan Vair y pwyll Gwinghill (1536), ll.fair ymhwll gwingill (1566). ‘Church of St Mary in Pwllgwyngyll’. Welsh llan + Mair. The township name Pwllgwyngyll means ‘pool of the white hazels’ (Welsh pwll + gwyn + cyll). A fanciful addition of gogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch was further made in the mid-19th cent., meaning ‘fairly near the rapid whirlpool by the church of St Tysilio at the red place’ (Welsh go + ger + y + chwyrn + trobwll + llantysilio + coch), based on local names or features, giving an overall Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
