Llanfynydd is a village in Carmarthenshire, Wales.
In protest over plans to erect a wind farm nearby, on 19 July 2004 the village adopted the new name of Llanhyfrydawelllehynafolybarcudprindanfygythiadtrienusyllafnauole (Llan hyfryd a well, le hynafol y barcud prin dan fygythiad truenus y llafnau o le, English: a quiet beautiful village, a historic place with rare kite under threat from wretched blades).[1]
The name was chosen to reflect one of the worries that local residents have about the wind farm, that it will threaten three endangered species of bird (red kite, curlew and skylark) in the local area. It was also chosen as it is longer than the current longest name in Britain — Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Anglesey — and would thus generate publicity for their cause.
The change took place despite reassurances from developers Gamesa Energy UK (part of Spanish giant Gamesa Corporación Tecnológica ) and the local council that the planned single wind turbine is merely a test to see how suitable the area is for wind turbines.
