Llywelyn ap lorwerth

Celtic Mythology: Llywelyn ap lorwerth

Llywelyn ab lorwerth

Fawr [Welsh mawr, great] (1173–1240). Most powerful of all medieval Welsh princes, ruler of Gwynedd, often known as Llywelyn the Great in English. A successful military campaigner, he also sued for Welsh rights against the English king John at the signing of the Magna Carta (1215). He none the less married John's natural daughter Joan, called Siwan in Wales. For all his worldly success, Llywelyn died in a monk's habit in the monastery of Aberconwy. Grandfather of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. His princely life has been the subject of two Welsh-language dramas, Thomas Parry's Llywelyn Fawr (1954) and Saunders Lewis's Siwan (1956), trans. as The King of England's Daughter (1985).
