Symbolic name given by divine command to the third of the three children of the prophet Hosea and his wife Gomer. It refers to the Lord's temporary rejection of Israel because of Israel's flirtation with Baal, the Phoenician god of rain (Hos 1:9). In the prophecy of consolation in Hosea 1:10-11, 16-23 this symbolic name is applied collectively to the people of Israel.
