Location Area Identity

Wikipedia: Location Area Identity

Each location area of a public land mobile network (PLMN) has its own unique identifier which is known as Location Area Identity (LAI). This internationally unique identifier is comprised of a three decimal digit Country Code (CC), a two to three digit Mobile Network Code (MNC), and a Location Area Code which can be up to 5 decimal digits. The LAI is broadcast regularly by Broadcast Control Channel (BCCH). Mobile Station recognizes LAI and stores it in Subscriber Identity Module (SIM). Change of Location Area gives rise to location update request.
