A U.S. company that produces military aircraft and technology, space satellites and systems, and electronic products. Founded as the Lockheed Aircraft Company in 1916 by Allan and Malcolm Loughhead (pronounced “Lockheed”) in California, the company produced important military products, including the P-38 Lightning fighter-bomber in World War II. In 1995 Lockheed merged with Martin Marietta Corporation to become the largest U.S. defense contractor.
