Architecture: log house

A house constructed of squared timbers that have been hewn from round logs, thus requiring an adze and/or other tools to shape them; the timbers are laid horizontally and notched or otherwise fastened to prevent their spreading at the corners and to provide rigidity

and strength, and do not protrude at the corners as they do in a log cabin. The house usually has a shingled, pitched roof; often a chimney on a gable-end wall. Compare with log cabin, which is much easier to build.
