Looney Tunes

Games: Looney Tunes

Game Description

What could be better than getting up early on a Saturday morning to watch some of your favorite cartoons? Getting to actually play the star in one of course! And that's just what you get to do with Looney Tunes, developed by Sunsoft!

Take control of Daffy, Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny and many more of your favorite Looney Tunes characters. Play seven different characters, each with its own special level. Swim through the ocean as Daffy Duck. Run across the desert as the Road Runner. Have a dog fight while zooming across the sky as Porky Pig and many more. Only you can help them save the world by defeating some very familiar enemies and a few new ones that you won't be able to forget.

After defeating the boss at the end of each level there is a special mini-game, giving you fourteen games in just one 8-Meg cartridge. But always remember, be vewy, vewy quiet. Someone is hunting wabbits!

Review: Overall

Looney Tunes by Sunsoft is an okay romp with some of the favorite characters from Warner Brother's stable. Unfortunately this turns out to be a very poor use of these great characters. Throughout the game, the characters just don't have the funny quirks that make them so much fun to watch and should have made them equally fun to play.

This game has a very simple style, a bit too simple. There are no hidden levels, no power-ups and no excitement. There are bonus levels after each completed level but all they do is add to your points. They are in no way challenging or fun.

The entire game consists of moving forward, and sometimes up, in true standard 2D side scrolling play. There is absolutely nothing inventive about this game. There are no passwords but there are unlimited continues. If you die and you agree to continue the game, you will start at the board you died on. This is nice but if you get tired of the game and turn it off, you will have to start over from the beginning.

A huge problem with the game is that each level has nothing to do with the other. There is no overall story to follow. When you finally beat the entire game, there is no feeling of satisfaction.

The only good thing is that throughout the course of the game, you will play seven different Looney Tune characters. Each one has a special weapon except for Road Runner who just sticks its tongue out.

Each character has three hearts which is all they are able to get for the entire game. There are other heart containers along the way but all they do is heal. This is very unfortunate because as you get further along in the game each boss gets more hearts. The final boss, Elmer Fudd, has a total of ten. This is very hard to beat with only three hearts. Be ready to spend a lot of time trying to get the pattern down. This can be stressful for a younger gamer.

Each board and every boss has a very specific pattern. So while it's hard at first, after a few run-throughs you can memorize every enemy is and where they are. This makes for a very boring game.
