Biography

Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Lorenzo Antonio was born in Albuquerque, NM, but his greatest success has come in Latin America where his albums have sold millions of copies. Antonio hails from a musical family. His father, Amador Sanchez, a musician, songwriter, and record producer is best-known as Tiny Morrie, whose songs were covered by Generacion 2000, Pegasso, Bandido, and Sparx. His mother, Gloria Puhl, is a vocalist who has recorded two albums. His grandmother was a concert producer in Albuquerque who produced shows by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and James Brown. An uncle, Albert Sanchez (known as Al Hurricane/the Godfather), was the lead singer and leader of the band Bandido. In April 1982, Antonio launched his musical career by winning a songwriting competition at the festival Juguermos A Cantar. He performed his song "Vamos a Jugar" with his sisters Carolina, Kristyna, Rosamaria, and Veronica, who continued to perform as the vocal group Sparx. The same year, he received a prestigious Amprofon gold award from the Fonographic Industry for the album Juguermos A Cantar. Antonio expanded his following when he performed as the opening act for Menudo at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City in April 1983. The following October, he represented Mexico at a festival, America, Este Es Tu Cancion, in Orlando, FL. After his 1984 album, Busco Un Amor was certified gold, Antonio followed it with the platinum-selling album 12 Rosas, which included the Latino hits, "Dile," "No Llorare," "El Idioma Del Amor," and the title-track. In the mid-'80s, Antonio temporarily retired from performing to concentrate on his studies at the University of New Mexico and to write and co-produce albums for his sisters' group Sparx. He resumed his career in 1993, releasing the first of two tribute CDs to honor the influence of Mexico-born singer/songwriter Juan Gabriel. He released the second volume two years later. Lorenzo Antonio, (born Lorenzo Antonio Sánchez Pohl in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States on October 3, 1969), is an American singer and songwriter of Latin (Mexican) origin well recognized in the 1980s and 1990s particularly in Mexico and Latin America where he has sold millions of records. He also enjoyed a comeback in the late 1990s. Although most of his output is in Spanish, he has released songs in English as well.

Biography

Early Life

Lorenzo Antonio wanted to become a singer when he was very young. He also learned playing guitar very early. His sisters Carolina, Kristyna, Rosamaria and Verónica also formed a musical formation called Sparx. He had his first success in 1982, when he was just 12 years old and sang with his sisters in a songwriting competition at the festival Juguermos a Cantar with the winning song "Vamos a Jugar". They appeared at the competition as "Lorenzo Antonio y Su Grupo" (Lorenzo Antonio and His Group).

In 1983, he performed as the opening act for Menudo at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. In October 1983, he represented Mexico at a festival, America, Este Es Tu Cancion in Orlando, Florida

Career

His big success came through Busco Un Amor that was certified gold, Antonio followed it with the platinum-selling album Doce Rosas, which included the Latino hits, "Dile," "No Llorare," "El Idioma Del Amor," and the title-track "Doce Rosas".

After 1985, Antonio temporarily retired from performing to concentrate on his studies at the University of New Mexico, but continued to write and co-produce albums for his sisters' group Sparx.

He resumed his career in 1993, releasing the first of two tribute CDs to honor the influence of Mexico-born singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel. He released the second volume entitled Tributo 2 two years later. He followed that up with a number of albums most notably Siempre Te Amare. Antonio has also collaborated with Sparx on many albums in the 19909s and the 2000s including Sparx Y Lorenzo Antonio Cantan Corridos in 1996 and Sparx Y Lorenzo Antonio Cantan Corridos: Vol. 2 in 1998.

He has had numerous well-known hits including most notably "Doce Rosas", "No soy de Roca", "No lloraré" and "Ella y tu".

Lorenzo Antonio comes from a musical family. His father Amador Sanchez was a musician, songwriter, and record producer known as Tiny Morrie. His mother, Gloria Puhl, was a vocalist who has recorded two albums. His grandmother was a concert producer in Albuquerque who produced shows by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and James Brown. His uncle, Albert Sanchez was the lead singer and leader of the band Bandido and a renowned musician known as Al Hurricane dubbed Godfather of New Mexico Music.

He dated Lucero on the 1980s, but broke up after the engagement.

He enjoyed a comeback also as a model and was declared as one of the most desirable male figures after publishing Lorenzo Antonio: Calendario 2009.[1]

Lorenzo Antonio is also very much involved in charity through "Sparx Lorenzo Antonio Foundation" in close cooperation with his sisters. Since 2001, date of its establishment, the foundation distributes college scholarships for New Mexico high school students.
