Toronto's Lisa Boudreau (vocals, percussion) and Terry Tompkins (guitars, vocals) could be dismissed as just another depressing Canadian navel-gazing folk-rock duo if they didn't do it so well. Boudreau has a fine, if not particularly distinctive voice; the most effective numbers are when she and Tompkins entwine in harmony, evoking an Ian And Sylvia Tyson for the art-pop set. The best of these (and album centrepiece) is "Ghostly Minuet," and an achingly melancholic waltz with instrumentation that recalls a courtly clavichord. Titles like "Winter Raging," "All Consuming Mistress," and "Dark Globe" pretty well sum up the duo's lyrical perspective. Lost & Profound has crafted an ideal disc for those dark and/or lonely moods. ~ Roch Parisien, All Music Guide
