Review

Hailing from the scene that brought the defining sounds of the Smiths, the Stone Roses, Oasis, James, and the Charlatans UK, Doves is another Brit-pop band playing around with depressing lyrical imagery and embryonic soundscapes that made the Mancunian circuit so popular throughout the '80s and '90s. Gloriously basking in the ethereal ones before them, their debut Lost Souls is a shoegazing twist of emotional bliss. Music hasn't sounded so heavenly since Radiohead and The Verve.

The dozen-track look into streaming psychedelia taps into melodic waves of love lorn and sadness, especially on songs like "Rise" and "Lost Souls." The mood rouses and the positive clamor of "The Cedar Room" becomes the album's brassy anthem, very Oasis-like. Frontman/bassist Jimi Goodwin drools like a swooning Damon Albarn during "Here It Comes" and whooshing guitar licks from Jez Williams recall the sounds of Noel Gallagher. NME boldly claims it as the best debut album since Definitely Maybe. They're onto something good. If only Liam and Noel could calm down a bit and find that mesmerizing nature once again. [In October 2000, Lost Souls was issued in America on Astralwerks with three added bonus tracks not included on the original version]. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Biography

The Lost Souls never released any records, yet the meager recorded evidence that survives indicates that they were one of the finest unknown American groups of the mid-'60s, able to write both catchy British Invasion-type rockers and, in their latter days, experimental psychedelic pieces with unusual tempo changes and song structures. The band were also unusual in their occasional embellishment of the typical period guitar-bass-drums lineup with flute, sax, and mandolin. Although popular in their Cleveland hometown, they broke up in 1968 to attend college. Rhythm guitarist Dennis Carleton, who wrote and sang some of their best material, went on to briefly join the Choir, their chief (and more successful) rivals. He also played in several odd local bands in the '70s (including Moses, Milk, and the Pagans), as well as releasing solo material on his own label in the '80s that ranged from straight pop to nearly experimental. A cassette-only compilation of unreleased Lost Souls tapes appeared on Carleton's Green Light label in 1983. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Lost Souls is the debut album by the band Doves, and was released on April 3, 2000. The album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2000, but lost out to Badly Drawn Boy's The Hour of Bewilderbeast. The band had previously played as Badly Drawn Boy's backing band, having played on the Badly Drawn Boy songs "Pissing in the Wind" and "Disillusion,"[1] as well as Badly Drawn Boy's 1999 non-album single "Road Movie."[2]

Doves were originally known as Sub Sub, making disco/techno music. An electrical fire in their recording studio destroyed three years of their material. It was shortly after this point that they decided to change direction and reform themselves as Doves. This album followed soon after Doves released three preceding EPs: Cedar EP, Sea EP, and Here It Comes.[3]

The US release contains three additional bonus tracks: "Darker," "Valley," and "Zither" (all of which were previously released on singles and EPs in the UK). "Darker" was featured in the second episode of the FOX drama series 24 and also in the movie Dandelion.
