Review

El-Maghribi's recordings are a strange, and oddly attractive, mix. Many of these 1956 songs are almost classical in style. Others have passages of piano along the lines of Mohamed Skandrani's Algerian experiments, as well as touches of the Arabic pop of the time. With it all, El-Maghribi's style is pure Morocco (and interesting to compare with, say, Lebanon's Wadih el-Safi). But above all, he's a splendid singer. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, All Music Guide
