Louis Mandrin

 

Mandrin, Louis (1725-55). French brigand, whose combats with the hated tax-collectors made him a Robin Hood-like folk-hero, often coupled with Cartouche. He was broken on the wheel; his edifying death is the subject of the popular ‘Complainte de Mandrin’ (‘Nous étions vingt ou trente …’).
