On separate occasions during 1974-1975, New Orleans veteran trombonist Louis Nelson and pianist-vocalist Alton Purnell recorded in England with banjoist Dave Brennan's jazzmen. Nelson is in excellent form for his ten songs, interacting with trumpeter Bugs Burgon and clarinetist Martin Boyd on such numbers as "Wait 'Til the Sun Shines Nellie," "Marie" (a favorite of Nelson's), "China Boy," and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." Purnell plays some of his better piano solos on his own date, taking occasional vocals and sounding fine on "Alton's Boogie," "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket," and "Climax Rag." This CD serves as both an excellent showcase and a very musical introduction to the playing of these two underrated sidemen. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
