Louis R. Harlan is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Maryland at College Park. A former president of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the Southern Historical Association, he holds the Pulitzer Prize, two Bancroft Prizes and the Beveridge Award for his books about Booker T. Washington.

1972Booker T. Washington: The Making of a Black Leader, 1856-1901. Harlan, a history professor at the University of Maryland, wins the Bancroft Prize for the first of his two-volume definitive biography. The second volume, The Wizard of Tuskegee, 1901-1915 (1983), would also earn the Bancroft Prize as well as the Pulitzer Prize.
