Plot

The sophomore outing for writer/director/actress Troy Beyer, Love Don't Cost a Thing is a romantic teen comedy based on the screenplay for the 1987 Partick Dempsey film Can't Buy Me Love. Nick Cannon stars as Alvin, a brilliant but awkward teenager -- and budding engineer -- who seizes a golden opportunity when popular cheerleader Paris (Christina Milian) wrecks her parents' SUV and is strapped for cash. They strike an agreement: Alvin will do the repairs for free if Paris pretend to be his girlfriend for two weeks, all in the hopes of elevating his social standing. Little does he know, being popular isn't all its cracked up to be. Kal Penn and Steve Harvey co-star. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"Love Don't Cost a Thing" is the first single from Jennifer Lopez's second album, J. Lo (2001). It peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, besides being her first number one in the UK. Its Spanish-language version, "Amor Se Paga con Amor" ("Love Is Paid with Love"), featured on the Dutch and Spanish editions of J. Lo, only managed to chart on the U.S. Latin music charts. Jennifer performed the song for the first time at the MTV Europe Music Awards in November 2000. in Stockholm.

The lyrics of the song allude to indiscriminate treatment of the rich and poor, with regard to non-platonic relationships.

The music video for "Love Don't Cost a Thing" received two MTV Video Music Awards nominations in 2001: "Best Female Video" and "Best Dance Video".

Chart performance

In the U.S., "Love Don't Cost a Thing" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of December 9, 2000 at a lofty number forty-six. Within three weeks, the single was on the top twenty, and most notably rose from number ten to number four the week of January 27, 2001, as airplay of the single maximized (the single reached number one on the airplay charts in 2001). "Love Don't Cost a Thing" eventually peaked at number three for two consecutive weeks, unable to break the stride of stronger singles from Shaggy and Joe.

Nonetheless, "Love Don't Cost a Thing" began what would become an outstanding year for Lopez, and also one of her most popular singles of her entire career.

In Asia, the song topped the MTV Asia Hitlist for seven weeks, the longest stay at number one for a Lopez single. Since its debut, airplay increased rapidly, but fellow Latin artists Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera's collaboration "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" prevented the song for staying at the top spot for three weeks, by gaining more airplay. Thus, Lopez' single peaked at number two for three weeks, before descending the top twenty.
