Biography

Though based out of Minneapolis, MN, the pop/rock outfit Love in October can easily trace its roots back to Sweden. Erik Widman (vocals, guitar, piano, Moog) relocated from his native Sweden to Michigan in 2000 to attend college, his brother Kent (bass, Moog) following him out there two years later. In 2006, both relocated again together, this time to Minnesota, where the longtime musical partners started up a new project entitled Love in October. The band, rounded out initially by guitarist Nik Pfiefer and drummer Mike Swanson, started performing that summer and quickly made friends with popular local acts like Motion City Soundtrack. They eventually entered the studio with producer Ed Rose (the Get Up Kids, the Casket Lottery) to record their debut EP. The resulting power pop of Words of Sound appeared in late February 2007 via the Musik Group. In addition to just songwriting, however, Love in October further enjoy the visual arts, taking time to produce short films and music videos for themselves, and they garnered a healthy amount of online buzz for the video for their single "A Day in the Life Of." The video and song even earned the band a Best Music on Campus nomination for the 2007 MTVu Woodies, the awards handed out by the college-oriented arm of MTV. By the end of the year, Love in October found the Widman brothers completed by guitarist/pianist Charlie Abbott and drummer Chresten Hyde, and their debut full-length, Pontus, the Devil, and Me, recorded again with the help of Ed Rose, was released in January 2008. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

Music videos

"A Day in the Life Of"

In January 2007, they self-produced their first music video "A Day in the Life Of", directed by rock video maverick Justin Staggs. The video takes place in a turn-of-the-century ballroom with hints of modernism and 'out of place' elements. Unlike most modern music videos, "A Day in the Life Of" focuses on the screenplay rather than the band. A funny love triangle is played out at a party involving aristocrats, villains, and underdogs. The video was brought from concept to finished product in less than a month, involving over 50 cast and crew members. The videa features elaborate French Renaissance costumes, dramatic period sets, ballroom dancing, and sword fighting intersecting with a modern pop-rock feel.

"An Average Idea"

Their second music video for "An Average Idea" is a stop-motion animated by fellow Minneapolitan Lindsey Testolin, released in November 2007. The video is a fast-paced piece that tells a story of finding oneself, fighting the nine-to-five lifestyle, and dealing with schizophrenia all in one minute and forty seconds.

"Petrula the Destroyer"

The video for "Petrula the Destroyer" was released in April 2008, directed by Behn Fannin. This video is a fast paced psychedelic story of an office worker who gets taken over by puppets that make him do their bidding. The video combines complex layering of realities and loops space and time in unfathomable ways. This video garnered the votes of college students when it was chosen on week of April 28's MTVU series The Freshmen to be added to the MTVU music video rotation.

"Soft Errors"

A fourth music video, directed by Craig Brooks, released in June 2009. It was shot on location in Seattle and Los Angeles.
