History
The club was established in its current form in 1887, not adopting their current full name for a further three years, and play at Crown Meadow, with a top capacity of 2,250, including cover for 966 and seating for 466.[1]
The club went on to become founding members of the Eastern Counties Football League in 1935, and with Great Yarmouth, had unbroken membership from the formation to the end of the 2008/09 season.[2] The club has won the Eastern Counties League Premier Division title twelve times as of 2009[update]. From the start of the 2009-2010 season, Lowestoft Town will compete in the Isthmian League Division One North (Step 4 of the National League System), after being promoted for the first time in the club's 123-year history.
They have reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup 6 times, including the current 09-10 season in which they faced Wrexham FC at the Racecourse Ground. The game against Wrexham ended in a 1-0 defeat; This was their first appearance in the first round since 1977.
In the 2007-08 season Lowestoft Town reached the final of the FA Vase for the first time, but were beaten 2-1 at Wembley Stadium by Kirkham & Wesham.[3]
They currently also have a reserve side playing in the Eastern Counties Football League Reserve Division North, and have a thriving youth set-up, with an under-18 side in the Ridgeons Youth League (East Division) as well as under-17 and under-15 sides.
Since their trip to Wembley in 2008, Lowestoft have enjoyed a far higher average attendance than all other teams in the Eastern Counties League and now in the Isthmian League Division 1 North. From the 2007/08 season to the 2008/09 season their average league attendance rocketed by 81.4%[4], and as they push for a second successive promotion the average is ever increasing. Despite there being over 130 teams in leagues above (in steps 1-3 of the non-league pyramid), Lowestoft is currently ranked the 37th best supported non-league club[5]. Only F.C. Halifax Town have a higher attendance from all of the Step 4 leagues.
