(b Matosinhos, 25 June 1933). Portuguese architect and teacher. He studied (1949-55) under Carlos Ramos and Fernando T?vora at the University of Oporto, where he himself later became professor of architecture in 1965. Beginning his career with the highly organic Boanova Restaurant (1958-63), Matosinhos, designed with a group of fellow students, he went on to realize a series of small buildings that were well integrated into their respective sites, such as two swimming-pools built in Matosinhos: the Piscina de Quinta de Concei??o (1958-65) and the Piscina de Leca (1961-6), the former being integrated into an existing park and the latter being excavated out of a rocky escarpment facing the sea. The Piscina de Leca typifies Siza Vieira's general approach in that great care was taken in finding the most advantageous contours in order to reduce blasting to a minimum and to create an adult and a children's pool, so that both pools now appear to be a natural part of the topography.
