Lyneham is a large village (often referred to as a small town) in northern Wiltshire located on the A3102 road between the towns of Calne and Wootton Bassett. The nearest major town is Swindon, 18 km (11 miles) to the northeast. The village forms part of the civil parish of Lyneham and Bradenstoke.

It is the location of the RAF Lyneham airbase, home to much of the RAF's C-130 Hercules fleet and frequent visits from C-17 Globemasters from RAF Brize Norton. This is scheduled to close in 2012-2013, though no final decision has yet been made by the UK's Ministry of Defence. Redevelopment, regeneration and community strategies are already being formulated to deal with the loss of the RAF base to the local economy together with future land use issues, ie, regarding how the current air base area and large swathes of MOD housing can be managed. It is thought that the base may eventually prove to be an excellent brownfield site for well-planned, mixed use developments such as new housing, a business/technology park and a modern community centre.

There is a small shopping area in central Lyneham, including a Tesco Express and a Co-Operative minimarket.

Surrounding villages include Bradenstoke, Goatacre, Tockenham, Foxham, Dauntsey Lock, Hilmarton, Christian Malford and Preston. The main local towns are Calne, Wootton Bassett, Chippenham and Swindon.
