Route description

M-57 is a rural, two-lane highway connecting the following communities: Greenville, Carson City, Chesaning, Montrose, and Clio. The western terminus is at US 131, 14 miles (23 km) north of Grand Rapids. East of the terminus is Rosie's Diner in Rockford, original shooting location for the Bounty Paper Towel commercials of the 1980s featuring Rosie the Waitress.[3] From Rockford, M-57 runs east into southern Montcalm County, meeting M-91 in Greenville. Between Greenville and Carson City, M-57 and M-66 meet at a rural four-way intersection. In Gratiot County. M-57 meets U.S. Route 127 along the expressway portion of US 127. Plans are in place to replace this with a full interchange when the US 127 freeway "gap" is filled in. M-57 crosses M-52 just west of Chesanning and M-13 on the Saginaw/Genessee county line. The eastern terminus is at M-15, one mile (1.6 km) north of Otisville.[4]

History

M-57 was originally designated in Charlevoix County from Boyne Falls at M-131 (now US-131) through Boyne City and back to then M-131 during the 1920s. It is now M-75; in the 1930s, M-57 was designated from M-47 (now M-52) in St. Charles to M-66 (now M-91) near Langston. It followed W. North St., Beaver, W. Townline, S. Chapin, Grabowski, Merrill, Colvin, and Meridian/E. County Line Rds. in Saginaw County, and along Washington (Co. Rd. 505/555) and Stanton (Co. Rd. 522) Rds. in Gratiot County and Montcalm County respectively, going through Ithaca and Stanton.[2]
