In Islamic belief, Maalik (مالك) denotes an angel who guards the Hellfire, assisted by 19 zabaniya or guardians. In the Qu'ran, sura 43, 77, Maalik tells the wicked who appeal to him that they must remain in Hell forever because "they abhorred the truth when the truth was brought to them." It is also noted that when Muhammed ascended into the Heavens he met Maalik and he showed him a glimpse of the suffering of hell. It is also noted that Maalik never smiles.
In Hinduism, Sai Baba of Shirdi referred to Maalik as the God Himself, the Eternal Supreme Lord, Architect of Destiny. Maalik in Hindi language is called the owner. The famous quote by Sai Baba 'Sab Kaa Maalik Ek' [meaning, There's only One Lord for all the living beings] was intended to unite the people of various religions to a common faith.
