Macaulay or MacAulay (Scottish Gaelic: Mac Amhlaigh) is a surname of Scottish and Irish origin. The modern name is an Anglicisation of the patronymic forms of two different Gaelic personal names.

• The surname Macaulay when originating in Dunbartonshire in Scotland (see Clan MacAulay), and in County Westmeath in the Republic of Ireland, is derived from the same name in Gaelic. The modern Macaulay is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic Mac Amhalghaidh ("son of Amhalghaidh"). The Gaelic personal name Amhalghaidh is of uncertain origin.^[1]
• The surname Macaulay when originating in the Hebrides (see MacAulays of Lewis), and in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, is derived from a different Gaelic name than those listed above. In this case the modern Macaulay is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic Mac Amhlaoibh ("son of Amhlaoibh") or Mac Amhlaidh ("son of Amhlaidh"). These Gaelic names are derived from the Old Norse personal name Áleifr and Óláfr.^[1]
