Review

Crosscut Saw was a top-draw blues-rock band in Tallahassee, FL, in the mid- to late '70s, thanks to frontman Pat Ramsey, a gifted harmonica wiz and singer, and Julien Kasper, an equally gifted and charismatic lead guitarist. The group released a single LP, Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know, on the independent Surprise label in 1975, which Akarma Records finally reissued on CD some 30 years later. The material, not surprisingly, sounds a little bit dated, particularly the light but constant phasing applied to Ramsey's vocals and Kasper's guitar work, but it's also easy to see why Crosscut was such a fan favorite on the Southern rock circuit of the day. These guys could fire it up, and Kasper in particular could inject considerable heat into songs like "One's Too Many" and "Dead Shrimp Blues" when he launches into a lead, but countless blues-rock bands have come and gone without adding anything particularly innovative or fresh to what is essentially a rather conservative musical form, and Crosscut Saw is simply another of those bands, however exciting they were in a live setting. Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know is probably best viewed as a timepiece, but it will certainly please the band's still enthusiastic fan base, who have made Crosscut Saw's annual reunion shows in Tallahassee into something close to a rite of passage. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
