Plot

The timing for this docudrama serial was a bit off -- World War I had been over for three months by the time it was released. But, as the United States government was involved in its making, it did offer an accurate -- if somewhat corny and biased -- recounting of the draft process and basic training, dramatized through the stories of three men: elder brother John Evers (Richard Turner), who is the first to go to France, patriotic younger brother Jimmy Evers (Edward Burns), who's eager to fight for his country, and grouchy Joe Nelson (Philip Sanford) who views the whole experience dubiously until his affection for the Evers' sister Nancy (Emily Marceau) inspires him to be a good soldier. Because the war ended while the picture was being made, its drawing potential was questionable. But since the eight episodes were only one reel apiece, they were easy to throw in on an evening's program. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide
