Plot

Made in India is a portrait of the grassroots feminist organization SEWA (Self-Employed Women's Association). SEWA advocates organization instead of welfare for women living in poverty, and essentially operates as a trade union for self-employed Indian women, regardless of the work they do. Plattner's engaging documentary chronicles the lives of six Indian women involved with SEWA, including founder Ela R. Blat. The film won first prize at the Recontres Media Nord-Sud, Geneva, and was featured at the Margaret Mead Film Festival, the Munich Documentary Film Festival, and the Locarno Film Festival. It is subtitled, and a 92-minute version is also available. ~ Carrie Downes, Rovi
