Madre de Dios

 

(mäd'rā thā dyōs) , river, c.700 mi (1,130 km) long, rising in the Andes of SE Peru and flowing NE through NW Bolivia to the Beni River. It is a major artery of NW Bolivia, but frequent rapids make its lower course only partly navigable. It drains a rubber-producing region.

The name Madre de Dios is a fairly common Spanish-language designation for the Virgin Mary, literally meaning "mother of God". It can refer to:

• A old exclamation in Spanish-speaking countries. It has decreased as time has gone on and the American culture seeps into those Spanish speaking countries.
• Madre de Dios Province, Bolivia
• Madre de Dios Region, Peru
• Madre de Dios River in Peru
• Madre de Deus, a Portuguese carrack, sometimes referred to by its Spanish name
