Biography

Boasting a sound that straddled the border of alternative rock and emo-pop, Mae (an acronym for Multisensory Aesthetic Experience) was formed in early 2001 by guitarist Matt Beck, drummer Jacob Marshall, bassist Mark Padgett, keyboardist Rob Sweitzer, and vocalist Dave Elkins. The band initially started out as a project between Elkins and Marshall, students at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Recording sessions were booked at Padgett's home studio, and the duo quickly grew into a quintet as the co-founders rubbed shoulders with other local musicians. Nearly eight months later, Mae had cemented its sound and landed local shows with the likes of the Movielife, River City High, and the Exit. In the process, the group also recorded songs for a debut album, Destination: Beautiful, which was released in early 2003 by Tooth & Nail.

While touring to support Destination: Beautiful, guitarist Matt Beck stepped down from his post and was replaced by former Unsung Zeroes guitarist Zach Gehring. Destination: B-Sides surfaced near the end of 2004. Mae's second proper studio album, The Everglow, followed in 2005, and the band's dedicated audience (not to mention its coveted spot on the Warped Tour that summer) helped the album peak at number 51 on the Billboard 2000. Mae joined the Virgin College Mega Tour in early 2006, appearing alongside Over It and Yellowcard in the process, and a bonus edition of The Everglow appeared that April with additional tracks and a bonus DVD. The musicians' contract with Tooth & Nail ran out later that year, and they went on to sign a deal with Capitol, thus making Mae a major-label act.

Singularity was released during the summer 2007 and cracked the Top 40, selling roughly 17,000 copies during its first week. It proved to be Mae's only release for Capitol, however, as the band left the label's roster in 2008 and forged ahead as an independent act. Early the following year, the (m)orning EP became Mae's first independently released disc, although it received a widespread release in September courtesy of Cell Records. ~ MacKenzie Wilson & Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

History

Jacob Marshall and Dave Elkins began what would become Mae by writing their first song, "Embers and Envelopes", in Marshall's living room. The band signed with Tooth and Nail Records and released their first album, Destination: Beautiful, in 2003. They released their second full-length album, The Everglow, in 2005. The band toured extensively to promote it, and also performed on the Vans Warped Tour. Mae re-released The Everglow in 2006, adding three new songs and a two-hour DVD.

Later in 2006, the band signed to Capitol Records for their third full-length album. Mae began recording the album in the fall of 2006, working with producer Howard Benson (who has produced albums for Saosin, My Chemical Romance, and Relient K). The album, titled Singularity, was released on August 14, 2007. On June 19, 2007, the band released the first single from Singularity, "Sometimes I Can't Make It Alone".

On September 24, 2007 Padgett and Sweitzer parted ways with Mae.[6] As of July 2009, Padgett still contributes in the studio.

In 2008, Mae announced that they have split ways with Capitol Records. [7] They have also stated that they will release one new song for each month of 2009. These songs are available to download on their website for a minimum donation of $1. Proceeds will go to humanitarian projects of Mae's choosing. Additionally, they will be compiling these songs into three separate EP's entitled (m)orning, (a)fternoon and (e)vening, respectively. They will be released periodically in 2009.

On December 17, 2008, Mae released a demo version of the song "Somewhere" on their MySpace page.

The EP entitled (m)orning was released in stores and online on September 22, 2009. There was a limited edition disk that was only available on their spring US tour. The actual disc for the limited edition of (m)orning is scratch-and-sniff. It is scented like the Ocean and the band encourages the members in the crowd of their live shows to smell the disc during their song from the Everglow entitled "The Ocean."

In July 2009, Mae announced they were starting their own label called "Cell Records" through which they would release their three EP set. In order to get in store distribution Mae returned to their original label Tooth and Nail Records and signed a distribution agreement with the label.
