The pink jersey (Italian: maglia rosa) is awarded to the leader of the General Classification (GC) at the Giro d'Italia. The leader of the GC is the rider who has the fastest time when all the stage results are added together, taking into account time bonuses for high finishes and intermediate sprints. The final leader of the GC is judged to be the overall winner of the Giro.

In Tour de France, the overall leader is awarded a yellow jersey, which originally corresponds with the yellow newsprint of L'Auto (later L'Équipe) - the chief sponsor. Whereas the overall leader of Giro d'Italia has been wearing a pink jersey since 1931, which reflects the paper colour of the sports newspaper, La Gazzetta dello Sport, originally sponsoring the race.
