Plot
Michelle Yeoh (billed as Michelle Khan) stars as Ming Ming, a bullwhip-wielding pilot and adventurer inspired heavily by Indiana Jones. Ming Ming gets involved in a rebel plot against the Japanese occupation of China during the 1930s. Her efforts are confounded then later aided by a con man whom she mistakes for a spy she is supposed to contact (Richard Ng). This film showcases Yeoh's visually impressive martial arts abilities and also features the international intrigue of Raiders of the Lost Ark and its sequels. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, All Movie Guide
Review
Magnificent Warriors is a visually exciting, action-filled adventure film set during the World War II Japanese occupation of parts of China. Starring Michelle Yeoh as Indiana Jones-style purveyor of derring-do Fok Ming Ming (she even wields a mean bullwhip), Derek Yee as a fellow agent, Lau Ping-Tai as an impressive officer's daughter, and Richard Ng as the comic relief, the movie features an overabundance of action, ass-kicking, and plot, though it's pretty short on characterization: The three main characters don't trade life stories until an improbable scene in which they're strung up in a courtyard, waiting to be shot. Before that, though, there are covert operations, mistaken identities, and the requisite fight scenes, wherein nearly the entire principal cast faces off against one another before setting out to liberate an occupied Chinese city. The resulting battle scenes, involving weapons from bows and arrows to armored tanks, are impressively well filmed, and the cast on the whole is excellent, taking on a convoluted script and an enormous amount of stunt work. Yeoh is particularly impressive in this early role, playing her part with grace, wit, and humor. Part war movie, part Western, and part historical drama, the most impressive thing about Magnificent Warriors is that it stays afloat amid the considerable demands that are placed on it. ~ Genevieve Williams, All Movie Guide
