Mahasarakham University (MSU) is a public university located in the city of Maha Sarakham in the northeast (Isan) region of Thailand.

Mahasarakham University was established as an independent public university in 1994. Previously it was a branch campus of Srinakharinwirot University. Its history can be traced back to College of Education (Mahasarakham) which was founded in 1968.

Currently, the university has two main campuses, one on the outskirts of Mahasarakham City and another at Kamrieng district about 8 kilometres away on the Kalasin road. The university is expanding rapidly to meet increasing demand for higher education in this relatively underdeveloped part of rural Thailand, and there are a number of small satellite centres in locations such as Udon Thani and Yasothon. The current President of the University is Professor Dr Adulya Viriyavejakul.

At the time of writing there were 15 faculties, 1 college, and 1 School:

1. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

2. Faculty of Science

3. Faculty of Education

4. Faculty of Technology

5. Faculty of Nursing

The city of Maha Sarakham is also home to the Maha Sarakham Rajabhat University and a number of other colleges, which explains its nickname as the educational centre or 'Taxila' of Isan. Maha Sarakham province is about 450 kilometers from Bangkok. The only direct public transport link is by coach, but transfers are available from the airports in Khon Kaen and Roi Et, or from the railway station at Ban Phai.
