History
The first Siamese medical school, the Rajapaethayalai (Thai: ราชแพทยาลัย), was founded under commissions of King Chulalongkorn in 1889 situated on the former Rear Palace or today's Bangkok Noi campus. The medical school underwent several name changes and went to join Chulalongkorn University organized by Vajiravudh's decree in 1916 as the Faculty of Medicine to Chulalongkorn University.
However, the government of General Phibun then separated the Faculty of Medicine (then Siriraj Medical School), Departments of Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Science from Chulalongkorn University and re-organized them into the University of Medical Sciences. The university was officially founded on February 7, 1943. The university experienced drastic growth. In 1965, another medical school was established - the Faculty of Medicine of Ramathibodi Hospital at Payathai thus beginning the Payathai campus. In 1968, the university had its own Pharmacy and Dentistry faculties at Payathai apart from those received from Chulalongkorn University. On February 21, 1969, King Bhumipol Adulyadej declared the name of the university to be changed to Mahidol University in honor of his father Prince Mahidol, the Krom Khun Songkla who was also revered as the Father of Modern Thai Medicine. The university bought a large suburban area known as Salaya in 1971 for its future developments. In the following years, the former faculties of Dentistry and Pharmacy were returned to Chulalongkorn University.
King Bhumipol expressed his will that Mahidol University should also expand to the Social Science fields, so the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities was founded in 1969. The construction of Salaya campus began in 1975 but was readily delayed due the political situation and financial shortage. On July 23, 1983, the Salaya campus was officially opened. Later academic developments of the university tended to deviate from traditional Health Science area to facilitate academic demands of the country. The first internation college in Thailand was founded in Mahidol University in 1986. In 1999, the Rajasuda College devoted solely to disabled person was established. Adhasit Vejjajiva, father of current Prime Minister of Thailand Abhisit Vejjajiva, had once been the president of Mahidol University from 1995 to 1999.
In 2002, Mahidol University expanded its campus to Kanchanaburi - to offer its students more learning opportunities with rural communities. The university is currently constructing the Amnaj Chareon Campus to be completed in 2009.

Mahidol University is ranked top overall in Thailand and 30th in Asia according to Quacquarelli Symonds Asia Ranking in 2009[1], although all other foreign ranking sources usually put the university around 3rd or 4th.
Mahidol University entered the THES - QS World University Rankings in 2006 as the 322nd of the world and 3th in Thailand preceeding by Chulalongkorn and Thammasat University respectively. Next year, 2007, the university proceeded to the 284th of the world and 2nd in Thailand only preceeded by Chulalongkorn. In 2008, still at 2nd in Thailand, the university proceeded to the 251st of the world.
The university, however, don't rank well in Webometrics. Since the entrance into the rank in 2006, Mahidol University had stayed steady at about 900th of the world until January 2008 when it proceeded to 802nd of the world and 5th of Thailand. In recent rankings Mahidol University experienced the boost in Webometrics with 740th/4th in July 2008 and 548th/4th in January 2009.
Due to the persistent focus on medical science, Mahidol has full professors appointed by the Thai monarch on academic merits and receives research grants/income from both the government and private sectors more than any other university. It has three huge hospitals, run independently by three different medical schools and is also affiliated with other medicare institutes. In addition, Mahidol has also produced more research papers published in internationally acclaimed, peer-reviewed academic journals than all other Thai universities. Locations
Located in capital city of Bangkok, Mahidol University has several campuses: one suburban campus and two older inner-city campuses in the Bangkok metropolitan area, along with a downtown high-rise office site for the College of Management, and provincial campuses in Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan and Amnaj Charoen provinces.
Bangkok Noi Campus
This compact 28-acre (12-hectare) campus situated on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River is the original location of the Siriraj Hospital medical school where Mahidol University was founded. Specializing in medicine, this campus houses Faculties of Medicine, Medical Technology, Nursing and Physical Therapy and Applied Movement Sciences. Various personal and recreational facilities including dormitories, cafeterias and sporting facilities complement the academic setting.
Phayathai Campus
This urban campus of 78 acres (32 hectares) spreads over three linked compounds in central Bangkok and houses Ramathibodi Hospital and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, with Mahidol University’s traditional focus on medicine and the sciences actively pursued at the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, Tropical Medicine, and Science. It also houses the Institute for Innovation and Development of Learning Process, the National Doping Control Center and the Mahidol University Computing Center, along with a full-range of supporting facilities and student accommodation.
Salaya Campus
A suburban campus, Salaya Campus is situated on a site of 520 acres (210 hectares). The relaxed semi-rural setting, within easy reach of central Bangkok, makes it an ideal setting for studying or working in tranquility, without losing out on the myriad of opportunities available in the city. It houses the majority of academic and research departments at Mahidol University, and a full range of supporting facilities including the Central Library and many branch libraries, computer labs, the Office of the President, an indoor stadium and 5 swimming pools, the Student Union, many shops and cafeterias, and student dormitories and condominiums.
Provincial Campuses in Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan and Amnaj Charoen
Kanchanaburi Campus in western Thailand was opened in mid-2002 with the main objective of expanding higher education in the upcountry region, in order to increase local incomes, create occupational opportunities and improve the quality of life of rural people. Thus far an Administration Building, 2 Lecture and Laboratory Buildings, 13 dormitories and associated infrastructure have been constructed on the large 2,370-acre campus, in addition to 2 field stations for research in population studies and tropical medicine. The Faculty of Veterinary Science has opened the first hospital for livestock and wildlife of the country on this campus. Four plant nurseries in the Faculty of Science have been built for students in the Agriculture Science program. Over the next decade, Mahidol University plans to expand the 6 bachelor degree programs offered at present to around 20, and complete additional building projects, including 6 additional dormitories to accommodate an expected student body of 2,400.
Mahidol University continues to develop two additional provincial campuses of 672-acres in Nakorn Sawan province in the north of the country, and 169-acres in Amnaj Chareon province in the northeast. Nakhon Sawan Campus, with an Administration Building and a lecture and Laboratory Building, is currently accepting students in Management. It is expected that a Science program will be offered in the future. Amnaj Charoen Campus is undergoing construction, with a multipurpose building expected to be completed in 2009.
