Maize is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. It is located in south-central Kansas, near Wichita. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. Its current mayor is Clair Donnelly.
History
Maize was founded by Henry Loudenslager in 1886, and incorporated May 17, 1915. The name maize was suggested by the Wichita & Colorado Railroad, as the town was founded along the railroad through the corn belt.[citation needed]
Geography
Maize is located at 37°46′23″N 97°28′0″W / 37.77306°N 97.466667°W / 37.77306; -97.466667 (37.772944, -97.466684)[3].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (200.1 km²), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,868 people, 632 households, and 523 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,274.9 people per square mile (879.6/km²). There were 668 housing units at an average density of 813.5/sq mi (314.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.47% White, 0.96% African American, 1.23% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.91% from other races, and 3.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.62% of the population.
There were 632 households out of which 49.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.6% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.2% were non-families. 15.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.28.
In the city the population was spread out with 34.4% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $51,845, and the median income for a family was $53,365. Males had a median income of $41,653 versus $25,817 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,803. About 1.9% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.4% of those under age 18 and 1.4% of those age 65 or over.
Education
Maize, KS hosts the USD 266 school district. This suburban school district houses more than 6,200 students.

In Spring of 2007, The Maize School District proposed a several hundred million dollar bond issue due to extreme growth in the district (Maize, and Northwest Wichita). The plan will turn Maize South Middle School into a high school, build a new middle school, and new elementary school. Along with the new schools, a Trans-Net Facility would be built. In the future a second new elementary school would be built. Existing Elementary schools (PWS, MES, VPS, MCE) will be transformed to K-5 buildings. The project is expected to be completed by August 2009.
