The National Institute of Technology at Jaipur was established in the year 1963 in the "pink city" of India. MNIT is one of the 20 NIT's established in different states of the country, governed by the NIT council under the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. The institute is fully funded by MHRD, the Government of, India, New Delhi. The non-plan and plan budget is of the order of Rs. 12 crores and Rs. 6 crores per annum. The current Director of the Institute is Prof. R.P.Dahiya. The board of Governors include noted industrialist Mr. Hemen Das(Chairman), Nominee of the State Government,MHRD, Director IIT(New Delhi) and others.

History
The Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur is one of the Centres of Excellence in the country established by the MHRD, Government of India. The Institute formerly known as Malaviya Regional Engineering College was established in the year 1962, as a joint venture of the Government of India and Government of Rajasthan.
In 1963, the college started functioning from its temporary campus at Pilani and admitted 30 students each in Electrical Engg. and Mechanical Engg. The college moved to the present campus to Jaipur in 1965. The college was inspired by the great educationist and freedom fighter Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya and thus named as Malaviya Regional Engineering College. Prof. V.G. Garde, the great educationist and visionary, was the first principal to nurture this college into a world renowned Institution.
Since its inception, the Institute is committed to the cause of technical upgradation of the country in general and of the state of Rajasthan in particular. It is a matter of great pride that the Institute is well-known for its excellent academic and extracurricular standards. It is actively engaged in research, consultancy and development activities.
The Institute was originally conceived as a regional education centre and has, through the years, scrupulously guarded this character. All the states and union territories of the country are represented in the undergraduate intake of the Institute, thus making it a small but perfect example of the celebrated 'unity in diversity' of India.
It had a mandate to run five year Bachelor of Engineering programmes in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering. The duration of the B.E. Degree Course was changed to four years from the academic session 1983-84.
The Institute was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology and was declared Deemed University on June 26, 2002. However as on 15 August 2007 MNIT and all other NITs no longer hold this status as NITs have been declared as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the NIT Act. The Institute is now under The Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi. The Institute has also been selected to participate in the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program of the Government of India and the World Bank.
MNIT is one of the premier institutes in India with very high quality of education standards and students. It is rated among the top engineering colleges in India.
Academics
At present, the Institute offers eight 4 year undergraduate courses of study leading to the Bachelor of Technology degree (in Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Information Technology, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering) and 5 year undergraduate course leading to the Bachelor of Architecture degree, with a total of over 1800 students.There are ten PG specializations, in CAD structures, Urban Design, Environment engineering, etc., besides doctoral programs with over 300 students. There are over 150 highly motivated, young and dynamic faculty members engaged in teaching and research.
Admissions to the institute are through the All India Engineering/Architecture/Planning Entrance Exam [AIEEE], as all other NIT's.
MNIT, Jaipur recently became India's first fully wireless Government funded Institute, with wired as well as wireless networks linking the entire 400-acre (1.6 km2) campus.

Campus
Extending into an area of over 312 acres (1.26 km2) of lush greenery, the campus of the Institute is imaginatively laid-out with a picturesque landscape. It presents a spectacle of harmony in modern architecture, and natural beauty which enthralls and inspires.
The campus provides all essential amenities for community living like staff clubs, hospital, banks, post office, community centre, school, staff residences, gymnasium, playing fields, guest houses, canteen etc.

Staff Colony
The instructional buildings include departments, Central Library and administrative block and are at a walking distance from the students hostels and staff colony. The instructional buildings have been so located that these are fairly near to both the hostels and the staff quarters and are at a walking distance from both. There is a branch of The Bank of Rajasthan Ltd. on the premises and a Post-office in the campus. A full-fledged dispensary is supervised by a team of Medical Officers and two Compounders. The Institute has also been extending facility of a Part-time Homeopathic doctor and Ayurvedic doctor in the campus. Adequately equipped Canteen buildings, one near the instructional zone and another near the hostels provide facilities to the students and the staff during and beyond the working hours of the Institute.

Guest Houses
There are two guest houses in the campus to cater the needs of guests and students.
Sports
Adequate facilities are available for sports and games and for co- curricular activities. The campus is well laid out with roads, electrical installations, water supply and underground drainage system etc.
Banks
There is a branch of the Bank of Rajasthan Limited and a Post-Office in the campus. Other reputed banks such as SBI, ICICI, PNB etc. are within walking distance from the institute campus.
Medical Facilities
A full-fledged Dispensary is available in the campus. It is supervised by a residential Medical Officer. The services of a part-time Homeopathy Doctor and a Lady Doctor are also available to students and to the family members of the staff.
Extra Curricular Activities
MNIT, every year,conducts one of India's most successful sports meets, MNIT Sports Tournament. Students from all across the country, of various NITs and IITs participate in the event. MNIT is part of the much respected Inter-NIT sports federation. MNIT also hosts Blitzschlag, a national level techno-cultural festival, which initially began as an intra college festival organised by Mechanical Engineering Society, MNIT. The institute has a separate sports department with a faculty strength of five coaches and five support staff, other than the gardeners. The collage has international size basketball courts (four), football ground(one),tennis court(two, with flood lights), badminton and table tennis courts (separate in every hostel, open 24hours). There is one indoor badminton court in the sports department and a state-of-the-art gymnasium. There are three standard volleyball courts in the department

MNIT, jaipur furnishes enviable campus placements year after year in all the branches. The average placement figures generally comes out to be in ascending order of about Rupees four-five lakhs. Entrepreneurship Development Cell has been established to spread enterpreneurship, through education, research and training to the Engineers, Managers and science students.
