Review

This two-disc anthology is an outstanding collection of the very best songs Maldita Vecindad ever recorded, along with a smattering of rarities and remixes. Disc one covers the story up until the live EP Gira Pata de Perro (recorded during the tour to support their breakthrough album, El Circo). All the classics that made Maldita Vecindad a legend in Latin rock circles are here: "Pachuco," "Morenaza," and "Mojado" (in a superb live version). Disc two covers the story until today, with highlights from Baile de Mascaras and Mostros, along with two rare and worthy tracks, "Lo Pasado Pasado" and "La Tormenta," as well as a new remix of "Kumbala." As with any anthology, one might quibble with a missing track here and there (their raucous cover of crooner Juan Gabriel's mushy ballad "Querida" is sadly missing). A more serious flaw is that the liner notes are frustratingly unhelpful -- there's no indication when or where any of these tracks, including the new ones, were recorded. Still, the anthology is wisely chosen, showing the full breadth of this remarkable band's music, and the chronological sequencing demonstrates their musical growth. Maldita Sea will please fans with the previously unavailable tracks, and should wet newcomers' appetites for the excellent original albums. ~ Victor W. Valdivia, Rovi
