Biography

Latin rockers Maldita Vecindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio formed in Mexico City in 1985; comprising vocalist Roco, guitarists El Pato and Sax, bassist Aldo and drummer Pacho, the group debuted in 1988 with a self-titled LP which earned acclaim for its fusion of rock, ska and Mexican folk sounds. El Circo, widely considered a classic in "rock en Espanol" circles, followed in 1991, selling an astounding 600,000 in Maldita Vecindad's native land; around the same time, they appeared in Gift, a film directed by Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell. After a live LP, Gira Pata de Perro, the group recorded a 1994 LP with producer Bill Laswell which remains unreleased; instead, they resurfaced two years later with Baile de Mascaras, followed in 1998 by Mostros. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

La Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos del Quinto Patio (English: The Damned Neighborhood and the sons of the fifth Patio usually called only "La Maldita") is a band formed in Mexico City in 1985 Pioneer in genre fussion and is one of the most influential rock bands in Latin America.

They first make an impact with "Mojado", "Un poco de sangre", "Cocodrilo", "Pachuco" and "Un Gran Circo" which narrates the problems, adventures and beauty of a society anxious for improving his economic status. Along with their music the wardrobe is of classic Pachuco, an archetypical character represented by Tin Tán in the Mexican cinema. Tin Tan is sampled in one of the group's biggest hit, 1991's Pachuco.

The last studio album recorded was in 1998. Since then, the band has collaborated with other bands, as well as having participated in tribute albums like the tributes for José José and Tigres del Norte. History

At the end of the Eighties begins a movement denominated "Rock en tu Idioma (Rock in Your Language), a marketing phrase developed by some record seals to draw attention of the young people, whom it invites to a new current coming from Argentina, mainly influenced by bands like Soda Stereo, Los Enanitos Verdes, Virus, Autobús and Zas the band of Miguel Mateos, which were the pioneers of the rock in your language then, from there the sprouting of Mexican groups born from the middle-class and with influences of groups like The Police, [[[The Cure]], Paralamas do Sucesso, and others. The leader bands of the movement arise, Caifanes, Maldita Vecindad, Cafe Tacuba and Maná obtains exorbitant sales and great international recognition.

Maldita Vecindad appeared in the musical scene with a tendency unheard of in Mexico, the one of the mixing of rock with popular rhythms. The attire of Roco inspired by the Chicano culture represented by Tin Tan, the incorporation of the sax and to openly vindicate the culture of the capital open the way to them in the City of Mexico.

From 1986 to 1988 they participated actively in popular movements like the one of the victims by the Earthquake of 1985 and the elections of 1988.

Their second album El Circo was the one that really took them to the commercial success, reaching 800 thousand sold copies (a record-high then}. In 1991 in its first tour by the United States they played with groups like INXS, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Sonic Youth, Madness, Faith nonMore and Jane' s Addiction. Towards 1992, they got to alternate with [[Mano Negra and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs in the City of Mexico, when the fusion groups were not so popular.

The creativity of the band does not got itself stock in the narrative, they manage to adapt songs of other artists like Los Tigres del Norte, Armando Manzanero and Juan Gabriel and give them a style on its own

The Name

In the City of Mexico a "Vecindad" (Literally Neighborhood) talks about residential constructions inherited of century XIX and principles of century XX, still inhabited, composed by a patio, baths and common laundries of clothes for several poor families. The more patios would have a vecindad, more populated and therefore more poor it would be, reason why the name "and the children of fifth patio" that vindicates the urban and working origin of the band.
