A complicated, major operation which may remove 1.3-1.5 kg (2-3 lb) of tissue from each breast. It is usually performed for health rather than cosmetic reasons because oversized breasts can cause severe, chronic backache and other disorders. The operation sometimes leaves surface scarring, but most patients are more concerned with the alleviation of discomfort than minor effects on physical appearance.
