Man and Music: Music at the Court of Louis XIV

Plot

In the court of the Sun King, as Louis XIV was known, music had an important role. Several composers are the focus of Man and Music: Music at the Court of Louis XIV, including Jean-Baptiste Lully, who began at the court as a dancer and violinist in the mid-1600s. He became director of royal chamber music, then was promoted to director of the Paris Academie royale de musique. Michel-Richard (De) Lalande taught music to noblemen of the court, and was a principal composer of grand motets. The works of Francois Couperin are also discussed. ~ Alice Day, Rovi
