Plot

In this program, Russian music is seen against the background of the tsars, as Peter the Great constructs St. Petersburg and plans to open up the country to European culture. The life of Mikhail Glinka, who became known as the "father of Russian music" is examined, along with his relationship with Pushkin, the "father of Russian literature." Glinka's compositions influenced Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other later Russian composers.
