Mannerheim Line

[ʹmänərhām; ʹmænārhām]

Fortifications erected by Finland across the Karelian isthmus during the Finnish-Russian War. Begun in 1939 and never completed, the fortifications extended 80 mi./129 km. from the Gulf of Finland to Lake Ladoga.
