Man's Best Friend is a 1993 American horror movie starring Ally Sheedy and Lance Henriksen and directed by John Lafia.
Plot
Max is a Tibetan Mastiff who was genetically altered by a disgraced scientist called Dr. Jarret (Henriksen), who performs experiments on animals, including several endangered species. Inheriting the genes of other animals that grants him their traits, Max gets released from the lab by reporter Lori Tanner (Sheedy), and she adopts him and becomes his new master after Jarret. Despite this, unknown to Lori, Max attacks anyone he views as a threat to himself or to her, or as competition for her affections. However, when Jarret attempts to find the dog, Lori leaves Max (who has eaten a cat, raped a Collie, and mauled a mailman) in the hands of a junkyard operator named Ray, who abused Max rather than taking care of him and Max then kills him in retaliation.
At Lori's home, the furious and vengeful Max arrives and nearly kills Lori's boyfriend Perry and escapes from the police force as well as animal control. Meanwhile, he then murders the detectives who are after him.
The film then follows Max chasing Lori and Dr. Jarret to Emax, the company where Max was created. The genetically enhanced dog chases after Lori through the laboratory, but she is able to show him that she did not mean to hurt him and he returns to loving her. Then a battered, bruised and furious Jarret attacks, and Max leaps to protect Lori and is fatally wounded by him with a shotgun blast. However, pushed by Max, Jarret falls on top of a large cage, and Lori's new puppy Spike accidentally plugs in a live wire resting on the cage, causing flows of electrical energy to surge through the scientist's body, killing him instantly. Soon after, Max dies in the hands of Lori, who mourns and accepts his passing away.
Three months later, Lori visits her young neighbor Rudy, and is shown the new litter of puppies that his collie Heidi just had, of which one of the pups looks like Max.
