Mandatory Subject

Topic that must be discussed in collective bargaining. Mandatory subjects include hours, medical benefits, pensions, and wages. If one party to the negotiations refuses to discuss a particular topic, the NLRB can be asked to rule on whether or not it is a mandatory subject.
