(b Oldenburg, 17 March 1910; d Berkeley, 7 Dec 1955). American musicologist. He studied at Heidelberg, Berlin and Basle. Emigrating to the USA in 1939, he became an American citizen and taught at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1941 until his death. His main research was on 14th- and 15th-century English music but he is equally remembered for his Music in the Baroque Era (1947), a standard survey; his style-based approach has become increasingly prevalent in musicological writing.
