While this firm doesn't do business in New York City, it does have lofty ideas about life in London. Manhattan Loft Corporation (MLC) buys disused industrial buildings and warehouses and converts them into residential lofts. When developers were faced with a shortage of residential land in the UK, chief executive Harry Handelsman found inspiration -- and opportunity -- in the lofts of New York's SoHo neighborhood. He is credited with introducing loft living to London with the establishment of MLC in 1992. The firm also builds some of its properties outright, and has started building office and mixed-use projects. MLC has built properties in England, Wales, and Germany.
