the main hemicellulose of soft (coniferous) wood, made up of d-mannose, d-glucose, and d-galactose in the ratio of 3:1:1. Glucomannans occur in ferns and in certain higher plants and algae where they may function as the main structural component of the cell wall. Highly branched mannans can be extracted from the cell walls of some yeasts.
